WINDHOEK, DEC. 10 — The President of the Republic of Namibia, His Excellency Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, joins Namibians and the global community in commemorating International Human Rights Day under the theme “Our Right, Our Future, Right Now” and Namibian Women’s Day.
In his official message, President Mbumba emphasized the importance of unity and reflection on this significant occasion:
“Today, as we commemorate International Human Rights Day, we unite as a global community to reflect on our shared pursuit of promoting dignity, equality, and freedom for all humankind. Nationally, I join the Namibian people in marking Namibian Women’s Day, honoring the courage, resilience, and invaluable contributions of Namibian women to our democracy, freedom, and prosperity.”
President Mbumba reaffirmed Namibia’s commitment to justice, equality, and dignity for all, urging citizens to honor the sacrifices of the past while building a future where everyone’s rights are respected.
“This year marks a historic milestone in our democracy with the election of our first female President-Elect, H.E. Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. This remarkable achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment and gender equality,” he said.
He highlighted the significance of Namibian Women’s Day as a reminder of the sacrifices made by women during the struggle for liberation and their continuous efforts toward securing equal rights and opportunities across all spheres of society.
“Namibian women have been and continue to be the cornerstone of our communities. They are key drivers of change, propelling our nation toward greater heights and fostering hope for a sustainable future,” the President stated.
President Mbumba also emphasized the universal importance of International Human Rights Day, celebrated under the theme “Our Right, Our Future, Right Now”:
“This day serves as a powerful call to action to uphold universal values. It implores us to take decisive steps to promote and protect human rights as the foundation for an inclusive and sustainable future.”
Reflecting on the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), President Mbumba acknowledged progress while highlighting the persistent challenges in addressing this pressing issue.
“As we mark the end of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, it is fitting to recognize both the progress made and the challenges that remain in eradicating this pervasive issue. Let us recommit to eliminating all forms of GBV that compromise the safety, dignity, and well-being of individuals, particularly women.”
He called on all Namibians to renew their dedication to fostering justice, equality, and dignity for all, advocating for an environment where every individual can thrive, irrespective of gender.
“I urge every Namibian to actively work toward eliminating GBV and championing human rights to ensure a Namibia where everyone’s dignity is protected and respected. Together, we can build a brighter, more equitable future,” the President concluded.
“Happy International Human Rights Day and Namibian Women’s Day!”
