Hanse-Himarwa encourages learners to work hard

WINDHOEK, 22 JUN – Minister of Education, Arts and Culture Katrina Hanse-Himarwa on Tuesday delivered a motivational talk to learners urging them to do their best to obtain good grades.
Speaking during a visit to Immanuel Shifidi Secondary School in the capital, Hanse-Himarwa said Namibian children have a role to play in the country and responsibilities awaiting them.
She said that is why they must act fast, because the role and responsibly to take over from the current leaders of industries rest on them.
“I will not be here forever to be the Minister of Education in Namibia, I want to keep the space for you, but it is for me to hand it over to you and I am waiting for you to work hard and obtain good grades,” said Hanse-Himarwa.
She added that time is limited as she is getting old, and current teachers, principals, politicians, doctors and engineers cannot be in those positions forever.
“We want to go and rest, but when we do that, we want to go with the assurance that our children are ready to take over. We cannot leave our country in the hands of irresponsible, uneducated and illiterate people,” stated Hanse-Himarwa.
She noted that discipline, good manners, focus and dedication will help in the reaping of rewards.
“Amongst the most important things you must perform on this stage between life and death, is to live life to the fullest, you must educate yourself to become a valuable citizen to this country.”
The minister said they are aware that in the 2017 Junior Secondary Certificate (JSC), Immanuel Shifidi performed poorly as their pass rate stood at 25,5 per cent.
She noted that 25 per cent is very low as it represents grades between F and G.
“You don’t want to be an F and G learner, you want to be an A+, A and B learner and if you drop low, you want to be a C learner. If your friends can do it, so can you.”
Congratulating the Grade 12 learners, Hanse-Himarwa said they performed much better, though there is still room for improvement.
