WINDHOEK, 21 JUL – President Hage Geingob on Saturday bade farewell to the late Theo-Ben Gurirab at the Heroes’ Acre outside Windhoek, describing him as a giant who carried Namibia’s weight on his shoulders, effortlessly.
Speaking during the burial ceremony, Geingob said the nation was overcome by unbearable sorrow as it sends off one of its greatest sons.
‘It is Gurirab’s path of excellence that will shine hope and light on many generations to come,’ he said.
“As long as we remain bound by the strands of patriotism and unity, we have the power to overcome the greatest challenges that life presents,” Geingob told mourners.
The Head of State added that Gurirab managed to achieve great feats during his lifetime due to his sheer patriotism and urgent sense of unity.
“We thank him sincerely for his patriotism, audacity, intellect and hard work. It is our responsibility to preserve the memory of his life and extraordinary accomplishments,” the President said.
The onus, according to Geingob, is upon Namibians to continue building the Namibia that Gurirab and others fought for, with unwavering determination.
He described Gurirab as a diplomat of hope, messenger of peace, and torchbearer of a better Namibia.
“His life was a burning flame radiating light, guiding those who were caught in the dark tunnel of despair,” added Geingob.
Gurirab died on 14 July at the age of 80.
Between 1986 and 1990, he served as Swapo’s Secretary for Foreign Affairs and was a key player in Namibia’s liberation struggle.
He also served as Swapo’s Chief Representative to the United Nations for 14 years.
At independence in 1990, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs until 2002, when he was elevated to the position of Prime Minister.
Gurirab served in that position until 2005 and when he then became Speaker of the National Assembly until 2015, when he retired from active politics.
