WINDHOEK, Aug. 15- President Hage Geingob will spearhead the Namibian delegation to the 37th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government taking place from 18-20 August in Pretoria, South Africa.
Themed “Partnering with the private sector in developing industry and regional value-chains,” the Summit will discuss the Overview of the Socio-Economic situation in the region, Gender and Development, Status on the implementation of the Industrialisation Strategy and Roadmap and Request from the Union of Comoros and Burundi to join SADC, among other key issues.
The significance cannot be understated within the Region as the deliberation of these issues will likely enhance efforts towards achieving regional integration; Namibia’s participation in the Summit highlighting the commitment to achieving the objectives of the SADC.
Namibia is expected to be nominated as the SADC Deputy Chair, while South Africa will be sworn in as the new Chair.
Highlights of the Summit include farewell speeches by H.E. President Eduardo Dos Santos from the Republic of Angola when the General election takes place on the 23rd August 2017 and H.E. President Lt. Gen. Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama of the Republic of Botswana’s vacation of the office on the 1st April 2018.
The Summit will be preceded by the SADC Council of Ministers as from 15-17 August 2017. The Namibian Head of State will be accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Honorable Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Senior Government Officials.
Inauguration of President Kagame in Kigali, Rwanda
President Geingob will be amongst the many international Heads of State and Government to attend the swearing in ceremony of President-elect Kagame of Rwanda in Kigali, Rwanda on Friday the 18th of August 2017.
At both the SADC Summit and the Inauguration ceremony in Kigali, the Namibian leader is expected to hold bilateral consultations with other leaders in attendance as has become customary with all his trips outside the country.- NDN Staffer
