WINDHOEK, 03 JUN – The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias lost 31-47 at home against the Blue Bulls from South Africa in their sixth match of the SuperSport Rugby Challenge on Saturday.
In the match played at the Hage Geingob Stadium, Namibia’s senior men’s national team had little to offer in the opening minutes as the Bulls took the lead as early as the first minute with Franco Johan Naude running in a try, which was converted by Andell Loubser.
The visitors got their second try of the match in the seventh minute through Xolisa Guma and Loubser made no mistake from the spot.
The Welwitschias pulled themselves together and after brilliant play in the 13th minute of the match, they were rewarded with a try by Johan Tromp which was converted by Pieter Steenkamp.
It took the visitors just four minutes to find their third try in the 17th minute, with Nqobisizwe-Minentle Mxoli scoring and Loubser once again converting.
In the 28th minute, the Bulls added one more try through Matthys Basson, which was converted by Loubser for a 7-28 score line. The Welwitschias’ Steenkamp also missed a penalty in the 33rd minute of the match.
The half-time score was 7-28 in favour of the visitors.
In the second half, the Welwitschias came out more organised as Johan Greyling ran in their second try in the 45th minute and Steenkamp converted from the spot.
The Bulls continued adding to their score with Jamba Ulengo scoring their fifth try of the day in the 58th minute, but the conversion was missed.
The Welwitschias’ third try of the match came in the 61st minute after a brilliant run by Daniel van Vuuren added some points on the score board despite Helarius Kisting missing the conversion.
The Bulls’ Johan Grobbelaar and Guma scored two more tries in the 65th and 70th minute respectively, with Loubser converting both of them.
The Welwitschias also managed to pin in two more tries in the 67th and 81st minute through Darryl de la Harpe and Rohan Kitshoff, with only one of the tries being converted by Steenkamp while Kisting failed to convert the other.
In total, the Blue Bulls ran in seven tries, six of which were converted, while the Namibians ran in five tries with three conversions.
Despite losing the match the Welwitschias received a bonus point for scoring four tries in the match.
