JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 23 – Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema is attending the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, today. The summit is being hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and is also being attended by the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, and China.
The summit is expected to focus on strengthening mutually beneficial partnerships for growth, development, peace, and inclusive multilateralism in a multipolar world. President Hichilema, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), will also participate in the BRICS roundtable on “Promoting African Integration and Jointly Building a High-Level Africa-China Community with a Shared Future”.
The summit is taking place against the backdrop of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the global economic crisis. The leaders are expected to discuss ways to address these challenges and promote a more stable and prosperous world.
President Hichilema’s attendance at the summit is a significant opportunity for Zambia to engage with the BRICS countries and to promote its interests on the global stage. The summit is also an opportunity for Zambia to learn from the experiences of the BRICS countries and explore ways to collaborate on issues of mutual interest.
The summit is expected to conclude on August 24.
In addition to the summit, there are a number of other events taking place in Johannesburg in conjunction with the BRICS meeting. These include a BRICS Business Forum, a BRICS Exhibition, and a BRICS Think Tank Dialogue.
