Southern African countries call for climate smart agriculture

WINDHOEK, June 5 — Government ministers from Southern African countries have called for accelerating the adoption of climate smart agriculture to meet the food demand of a growing population.

According to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) secretariat, the call was made during a one-week meeting held by SADC ministers responsible for agriculture, food security and fisheries and aquaculture in Windhoek, capital of Namibia.

In order to accelerate the adoption of climate smart agriculture, the region will implement a project which will look at adaptation to climate change in rural areas, according to the SADC secretariat.

The project will also support the climate proofing of key commodity value chains and the use of specific climate smart technologies that can assist farmers to adapt to climate change and develop resilience of their farming systems.
The adoption of climate smart agriculture will allow for the production of nutrient dense crops, thereby realizing food and nutrition security in the region. – XINHUA
