“Gruesome” girlfriend killer jailed for 34 years

WINDHOEK, 26 OCT- A Gobabis resident who admitted to killing his girlfriend was today sentenced to a prison term of 34 years. Jacob Hoxobeb stabbed his girlfriend 16 times during a heated argument at Kanaan location in December 2016, amidst suspicions she was having an affair with a taxi driver.

Thirty-one year-old Hoxobeb admitted before High Court Judge Dinah Usiku, that he stabbed his girlfriend, Anastancia Goagoses, 30, about 16 times with a knife and caused her death on 05 December 2016. He told the High Court that he stabbed her because he suspected she had an affair with a taxi driver.

On this murder count with direct intention to kill, Hoxobeb was sentenced to 34 years imprisonment.

He received a further two-years-imprisonment on the charge of assault by threat after her had earlier threatened to chop the deceased person with an axe some few minutes before he finally committed the murder offence.

The sentence imposed on the second count of assault by threat was ordered to run concurrently with the sentence imposed on the first count of murder, meaning that Hoxobeb will have to serve a direct custodial sentence of 34 years.

Several State witnesses told the court during trial that they saw Hoxobeb stabbing the deceased in a frenzied manner on the day of the crime.

In his evidence in mitigation of sentence, Hoxobeb testified that he felt “very bad” about killing the deceased; an action that deprives his children the care of a mother and a father as he is undeniably going to prison for a very long time.

Hoxobeb is a first time-offender with no record of previous criminal offences, and has three children with the deceased.

Milton Engelbrecht, under the instruction of the department of legal aid in the Ministry of Justice, represented Hoxobeb, while State Advocate Ethel Ndlovu appeared for the prosecution.
