YAOUNDE, Nov. 19 — At least two separatist fighters, including a commander, have been killed in a military offensive in Cameroon’s restive Northwest Region, security sources said Tuesday.
Government forces ambushed and attacked the fighters late Monday in Ngoketunjia division of the Anglophone region, said a regional military official.
“After receiving tips from our sources on the ground, our brave soldiers ambushed the separatist terrorists who were patrolling the area and terrorizing civilians.
They tried to escape, but our professional forces neutralized them,” the official, who asked not to be named, told Xinhua by phone.
The official said the fighters were part of a group of separatist fighters who raided a mosque, killing three worshippers over the weekend.
Local police said security had been beefed up in the region following the killing of the worshippers. Cameroon has been experiencing an armed separatist conflict in its English-speaking regions of Northwest and Southwest since 2017, as separatists want to create a new nation.
