AMMAN, Aug. 22– Foreign ministers of 12 countries have condemned the Israeli airstrikes targeting the Abu al-Duhur military airport in northwestern Syria, calling the attacks a dangerous escalation and a “flagrant” violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a joint statement on Friday, the ministers of the countries, including Türkiye, Algeria, Indonesia, Jordan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mauritania, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Somalia, expressed deep concern over the continued targeting of Syrian territory and infrastructure, warning that such actions risk undermining efforts to restore security and stability, rebuild national institutions and address the humanitarian consequences of the country’s long-running conflict.
The statement said Israel’s continued violations threaten to further escalate regional tensions, undermine regional peace and stability, and weaken respect for international law and the UN Charter.
The ministers called on the international community to adopt a firm and principled position against what they described as ongoing Israeli aggression in Syria and urged concrete measures under international law to end such violations, calling for full compliance with the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Syrian territories.
Syria’s state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV reported, citing a military source, that Israeli warplanes carried out eight airstrikes early Tuesday on the runway of the Abu al-Duhur military airport in Idlib province, causing material damage but no casualties.
The Abu al-Duhur military airport, a major Syrian airbase, is situated near routes linking parts of Idlib, Aleppo and Hama provinces.
Following the attack, Syria’s foreign affairs authority and the Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes in separate statements, describing them as violations of Syria’s territorial integrity and unity. (Namibia Daily News/Xinhua)
