RUNDU, 03 JUL – A 20-year-old man accused of killing his mother, grandmother and three nephews over the weekend was remanded in custody when he made his first appearance in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
The accused, Jesaya Gabriel Chuhunda, allegedly assaulted his mother, grandmother and three nephews with a stick at the Ndama informal settlement, killing them instantly.
The incident occurred between 23h00 on Saturday and 05h30 on Sunday.
It was reported that the accused asked his sister for money and assaulted her when she refused to give him the money.
The sister then reported the matter to the police, which agitated the suspect and this allegedly led to his assault on the five deceased family members.
Chuhunda faces five charges of murder, read with the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act.
He appeared before Magistrate Vivian Ndlovu, who indicated that the accused cannot be granted bail due to the seriousness of the offence.
Ndlovu also stated that it would not be in the public interest and the administration of justice for the accused to be given bail.
She further indicated that investigations into the matter are not yet complete.
Chuhunda was advised to apply for Legal Aid and was referred for mental observation.
He is expected to make his second appearance in court on 20 August 2018.
Meanwhile, the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) on Tuesday revealed the names of the deceased.
NamPol spokesperson, Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi in a statement said they have been identified as Ndongo Ntumba, 77; Ndara Elizabeth Mpande, 46; Musenge Petrus Muruti, six; Hausiku Daniel Kapumburu, four; and the three-year-old Musenge Elias Tjingelesu.
