OSHAKATI, Mar. 24 – The Namibian Police (NamPol) are looking for two suspects who allegedly stole items worth N.dollars 18 000 from an Ondangwa business recently.
Crime Investigations Coordinator for the Oshana Region, Deputy Commissioner Hilja Haipumbu at a media briefing here on Friday said the two men, whose identities are known to the police, fraudulently bought the items, including plastic chairs, plastic basins and pipes from News Plastic Wholesale on 16 March.
Haipumbu said instead of depositing the agreed N.dollars 18 000 into the company’s bank account, the men only deposited N.dollars 180.
“They added two more zeros to the N.dollars 180 reflected on their bank deposit slip for it to read N.dollars 18 000,” the police officer said.
The suspects convinced the business owner that they deposited N.dollars 18 000 by giving him the altered proof of payment.
After receiving the items, they attempted to sell it to another business.
Haipumbu said they have recovered all the stolen items on 22 March following a tip-off.
“It was found at Trust Anyone Market and Bottle Store in Oshakati, where the suspects planned to sell it to the owner of that business,” she said.
Haipumbu appealed to business owners to be on the lookout for the new scam.
“People selling cars, especially in the open markets, have also become victims by accepting fake receipts and giving away their cars to the crooks before confirming with their banks that the money was really deposited in their accounts,” she said.
