WINDHOEK, June 5 — A report on livestock production trends in SADC member states revealed Wednesday that Southern Africa’s cattle population growth rate has been decreasing since 2014.
The report was released at a joint meeting here of Southern African Development Community (SADC) secretariat responsible for agriculture, food security and fisheries and aquaculture.
According to the figures, cattle population growth rate decreased from 1.2 percent in the period 2014/2015 to minus 0.3 percent in 2016/2017.
The report showed that livestock in the SADC member states have gone down by 222,000 between 2016 and 2017.
“In the period 2014-2017, the regional production of livestock and livestock products has been decreasing in most member states due to lack of access to international markets due to noncompliance and drought and floods related climate conditions resulting in death of livestock,” the report said.

The report also states that Trans-boundary animal diseases particularly Foot and Mouth Diseases continued to pose a threat to livestock growth and trade in livestock and livestock products.
The figures include countries of Namibia, Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. –XINHUA
