Oshakati to relocate residents

OSHAKATI, MARCH 21- AS part of ensuring housing delivery the Oshakati will relocate some 500 residents of the Eemwandi informal settlement to the new Onawa reception.
The residents are said to be relocate as from 01 May this year. Council is availing over 500 serviced erven to the residents at the new reception.
The residents will be relocated to the newly established Onawa reception which the council has earmarked for the development of 3 000 erven for the low earners.
This was stated during the conclusion of the three-day training on flexible land tenure for residents of Eemwandi and officials from the office of the council.
The training aims to help residents of informal settlements to understand the flexible land tenure system in order to create alternative forms of land titles that are simple and cheap to administrate than the existing one.
This will also help to empower owners to build modern houses.
In a media statement issued on Wednesday, the council indicated that so far 31 residents from the Eemwandi informal settlement have been already relocated to Ekuku.
“Eemwandi location will be relocated to the Onawa where they will receive surveyed and properly demarcated plots with water and electricity services,” read the statement.
Speaking during the event Deputy Director in the Ministry of Land Reform Gabriel Iindombo, stated that his ministry has selected Oshakati, Gobabis and Windhoek for the plotting of the projects.
He stated that the system will help people in the informal settlements to easily acquire housing finance. The training is also expected to be roll out to other towns if pilot project proves to be successful. – NDN Staffer
