OMUANGETE, 22 OCT – Omuangete Primary School in the Kunene Region on Saturday received 30 desks through a donation secured by the Kaokoland Descendants Welfare Organisation (KADEWO).
The donation forms part of group’s efforts to enhance livelihoods and make education accessible.
The project was funded by fishing company, Tunacor Fisheries to the tune of N$17 000, while Ongudi Investment donated notebooks, pencils and erasers to the school.
In a speech read on his behalf during the handover at Omuangete, Kunene Governor Marius Sheya heaped praise on KADEWO for meeting Government halfway.
He said more can however be done to improve educational infrastructure in the region.
“It remains a challenge for the government and it is hoped that more public private partnership initiatives can be conceived to make good on this endeavour,” said Sheya.
Accepting the donation on behalf of the school, Omuangete’s headman, Chief Tjihenu Tjiposa said the donation would contribute greatly to imparting skills and knowledge to the Namibian child.
“You saw the need of our children who write exams on the floor. But this is a thing of the past now. For the learners, please take good care of the desks. Study hard to emulate these young men from your region,” Tjiposa said.
One of the organisation’s founding members, Maitjuavi Kavetu explained that KADEWO is a non-profit organisation founded by students and graduates from the Kunene Region in 2016 to enhance the livelihoods of the disadvantaged indigenous communities in the region; solicit funds for bursaries; build capacity and instil a mentality of ploughing back into the community.
“KADEWO also advocates against the abuse of alcohol and substances with narcotic effects,” he said.
Asked how the organisation discovered that the school needed desks, Kavetu said they saw pictures that were circulated on social media.
“These kids were seated on the floor while writing examinations, without desks and some without chairs. Unfortunately, this is the reality in Kunene. Something needed to be done.”
He said the group previously collected blankets, school uniforms, blankets and food items which were donated to several schools in Kunene.
