MAPUTO, Aug. 19– Corruption-related cases caused losses of about 51 million U.S. dollars to the Mozambican state in the first half of 2026, the country’s Central Office for the Fight against Corruption (GCCC) said Tuesday.
GCCC spokesperson Romualdo Johnam told a press conference that losses totaled 3.23 billion meticais, while authorities seized 581,130 meticais, or about 9,185 dollars, in connection with corruption investigations.
The GCCC and the Public Prosecutor’s Office handled 1,646 cases during the first six months of the year, up from 1,509 cases in the same period of 2025. Johnam explained that among the various types of crimes recorded, passive corruption involving illegal actions was one of the most frequent, with 306 cases.
This was followed by abuse of power, active corruption, false representation of authority, embezzlement, and money laundering. Among the cases highlighted were investigations involving Mozambique’s state-owned airline LAM.
One case concerning alleged irregularities in aircraft transactions, catering contracts and other operations has been sent to court and involves nine defendants accused of offences including harmful administration, fraud, corruption, abuse of office and embezzlement.
The GCCC said other corruption-related cases involving public funds and state institutions remain under investigation. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
