MAPUTO, Sept. 18 -- The Confederation of Mozambican Economic Associations (CTA) urged Tuesday in Maputo the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) to step in and play its role in defense of the region's free circulation of people and goods from the xenophobic violence in South Africa. Eduardo Sengo, Executive Director of CTA, the country's largest employers' organization, told reporters that it was the SADC that approved the free circulation of people and goods, "so it's important for SADC to act and not leave member states to react individually as we saw." The deputy chief of the confederation recalled that South Africa itself was among the countries that devote to regional economic integration, so it should be in conditions to guarantee the ease of doing business. The CTA representative said that cargo transportation between Mozambique and South Africa is resuming but there is still fear among the vendors. He said that there is some uncertainty in terms of business relations and the private sector demands safety guarantees from the government. Since the recent wave of xenophobic violence broke out in South Africa, nearly 140 expats from the neighboring Mozambique have been forced to return home. A civil society organization is said to be preparing a peaceful march in Maputo for people to express their indignation against the criminal acts in South Africa. Xinhua
