WINDHOEK, FEB 19 – After six seasons, the sports soap Getroud met Rugby will come to an end in September 2022 on kykNET (DStv channel 144). This very difficult decision was taken after careful consideration and thorough research. After consultation with the producers, kykNET offered a six-month extension of the current contract. This extension of the production contract for another 55 episodes will give the Getroud met Rugby team an opportunity to plan their future, which we hope will include another kykNET production.
“It is with a heavy heart that we and our viewers bid the tenacious Stryders farewell in September 2022. A dynamic television landscape necessitates schedule changes, but these changes also bring new opportunities and new stories. kykNET thanks Deon Opperman, Overberg Productions and every actor and member of the production team who contributed to the remarkable success of this truly original South African series,” says Waldimar Pelser, Director of kykNET Channels.
Getroud met Rugby first aired on kykNET on 7 April 2009 as a drama series. The show, created by Deon Opperman and Hanli Rolfes, revolves around the fictional world of the Stryders rugby team. After five seasons as a hit drama series, it was developed into a daily soap in 2016. Over the past 14 years, the show and its characters found a place in the hearts of viewers with its strong cast and compelling storylines. The fictional local pub, Potties, has also become a popular venue for top Afrikaans musicians and performances.
“kykNET wishes to continue the good working relationships with the producers, talent and production team of Getroud met Rugby after the conclusion of this chapter – a chapter of which we believe the whole Getroud met Rugby team can be very proud,” says Pelser.
“Getroud Met Rugby has been an enormous part of my life as writer and producer for the past 14 years, initially with the five Getroud Met Rugby drama series’ and afterwards with the soapie. I’m deeply thankful to kykNET for making everything possible,” Deon Opperman writer and producer concludes.
Filming of the last season will commence in July 2022, and the final episode will air on kykNET (DStv channel 144) on 30 September 2022. – MultiChoice Namibia
