Study reveals humans move 40 times more than all wild animals combined

JERUSALEM, Oct. 28 — An international research team has discovered that the total movement of humans is about 40 times greater than that of all wild land mammals, birds, and insects together, the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) said in a statement on Monday.

The study, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, showed that human movement has increased by 4,000 percent since the Industrial Revolution, some 170 years ago.

In the same period, the movement of marine animals has dropped by about 60 percent.

As movement is essential for life, and animals traveling to find food, escape danger, and connect different ecosystems, the scientists warned that the global drop in animal movement is a clear sign that nature is under pressure.

To compare humans and animals, the researchers created a new measure that combines the total weight of a species with the distance it travels in a year.

Using this, they found that the total movement of humans on foot is six times greater than the combined movement of all wild land mammals, birds, and arthropods.

According to the study, most human movement happens by car or motorbike, followed by air travel, walking, and cycling, with each person traveling an average of 30 km a day.

The researchers noted that a single airline’s energy use equals the total energy all wild birds on Earth expend in flight over a year.

An accompanying study headed by WIS and published in Nature Communications has found that since 1850, the combined weight of wild land and marine mammals has dropped by about 70 percent, falling from around 200 million tonnes to just 60 million tonnes.

During the same period, the weight of humans increased by about 700 percent, and that of farm animals by 400 percent.

Together, people and their livestock now make up about 1.1 billion tonnes, showing how much humanity has grown while wildlife has declined.

This study revealed the extent of humanity’s dominance over wildlife and how difficult it is to undo the damage humans inflict on nature, according to the researchers.

In particular, marine mammal biomass has collapsed to about 30 percent of 1850 levels due to industrial hunting. (Xinhua)

Namibia launches national strategy to secure access to sanitation facilities

WINDHOEK, Oct. 28  — Namibia on Monday launched a five-year National Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy, aiming to end open defecation and ensure every household has access to dignified and climate-resilient sanitation facilities by 2027.

Speaking at the launch during the first National Sanitation Symposium in Katima Mulilo, capital of the Zambezi Region, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform Inge Zaamwani said the government views access to sanitation as a fundamental human right and a pillar of national development.

Access to sanitation is not a privilege but a fundamental human right, Zaamwani said, adding that it contributes to public health, environmental protection and economic growth.

She said the new sanitation strategy provides a framework for improving hygiene and waste management services nationwide, aligning with the country’s Water Resources Management Act of 2013 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 on clean water and sanitation for all.

The National Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy (2022-2027), approved by the Cabinet in 2022, focuses on promoting community-led and school-led sanitation programs, strengthening local partnerships, and expanding public awareness on hygiene practices.

According to the Namibia Statistics Agency, about 40 percent of the country’s 756,000 households still practice open defecation, mainly in informal settlements and rural areas.

In the Zambezi Region, the rate stands at 77.5 percent. Zaamwani called on ministries, regional and local authorities, private sector partners and development agencies to accelerate sanitation projects and investments, noting that greater coordination and education are key to changing hygiene behaviors.

The new strategy seeks to mobilize public and private resources, promote job creation through youth employment models, and support climate-resilient sanitation solutions to improve the health and well-being of all Namibians, Zaamwani said. (Xinhua)

UN agencies assist Caribbean nations in preparing for Hurricane Melissa

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 28  — UN agencies are assisting Caribbean nations in strengthening coordination and preparedness efforts as Hurricane Melissa, now a Category 5 storm, heads toward the region, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, on Monday.

The regional office for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is coordinating closely with resident coordinators and UN country teams, as well as with the Caribbean disaster emergency management agency and emergency authorities, on readiness and response, Dujarric told a daily briefing.

OCHA is deploying staff to Cuba and Jamaica this week, as conditions allow, to reinforce coordination and preparation efforts across the region, said Dujarric, adding that in Jamaica, the UN team is supporting national preparedness and response efforts in close coordination with the Jamaican government.

The World Food Programme is providing logistics support, while the UN Children’s Fund has pre-positioned water and sanitation supplies, as well as materials for child protection, he said.

The Pan-American Health Organization is reinforcing health emergency operations, the International Organization for Migration is preparing shelter support, while the UN Development Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the UN Population Fund are mobilizing for early recovery and protection, said Dujarric.

In Haiti, OCHA and its partners are supporting authorities to prepare for further impact, including pre-positioning relief supplies, as well as supporting with cash assistance, early-warning messaging and community outreach, said the spokesman.

In Cuba, where the hurricane is anticipated to hit Tuesday night, the Anticipatory Action Framework was fully activated on Sunday, with a 4 million U.S. dollar allocation released from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund ahead of the storm, allowing UN partners to pre-position food and essential supplies in the eastern provinces, he added. 2 arrested over 128 kg cocaine seizure at Sydney Airport

SYDNEY, Oct. 28 — Police have arrested and charged two men after 128 kg of cocaine was found in a consignment that arrived at Sydney Airport.

The police force in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said in a statement on Tuesday that the arrests were made by a strike force that was established to investigate a shooting at a home in Sydney’s inner-west suburbs in July.

During the course of the investigation, officers found evidence to suggest that the group responsible for the shooting was also involved in importing illicit drugs into NSW and subsequently identified a consignment that arrived at Sydney Airport on Saturday as containing 128 kg of cocaine.

The cocaine was seized and officers from NSW Police and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) on Monday arrested two men, aged 26 and 24, after they were observed allegedly trying to access the consignment at a Sydney freight forwarding business.

Another 4 kg of cocaine as well as cash, 4 kg of an unidentified crystal substance and 110 grams of methamphetamine was located and seized by officers executing search warrants at properties in western Sydney.

Both men were charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border controlled drug and participating in a criminal group.

The 26-year-old was also charged with supplying a prohibited drug in large commercial quantities.

If convicted, they both face maximum penalties of life imprisonment. NSW Police said that the 128 kg of cocaine had an estimated street value of 63 million Australian dollars (41.3 million U.S. dollars). (Xinhua)

1 killed, 4 injured in Israeli drone strike on S. Gaza: sources

GAZA, Oct. 27 — A Palestinian was killed, and four others were injured Monday in an Israeli drone strike on southern Gaza, according to Palestinian sources. Security sources said that the strike targeted a group of citizens returning to their homes in the Abasan al-Kabira area, east of Khan Younis.

Medical sources told Xinhua that the dead was identified as Farid Qudaih, 45, and that the four injured have been taken to the hospital.

The Israeli army has yet to comment on the incident. Also on Monday, Hamas said efforts are ongoing to complete the recovery of the remains of Israeli hostages, citing “restrictions imposed on the entry of heavy equipment and modern search methods into” Gaza as the main challenges.

The Israel-Hamas conflict erupted on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages.

Israel’s subsequent offensive has left more than 68,000 dead and 170,000 wounded in Gaza, according to Gaza-based health authorities.

Since the new ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10, 93 Palestinians have been killed and 337 injured, the authorities said Monday. On Sunday, Israel said Red Cross and Egyptian teams had been allowed to enter Gaza to search for the bodies of hostages.

Under the ceasefire deal, Hamas released all 20 living Israeli hostages while Israel freed about 2,000 Palestinian detainees. Israel estimates that the bodies of 28 hostages have been held in Gaza, some of whom were killed before being taken and others who died in captivity. Hamas has so far returned 15 bodies. (Xinhua)

Germany battles worsening bird flu outbreak

BERLIN, Oct. 27 — Germany’s poultry industry warned on Monday that the country’s worsening bird flu outbreak could drive up egg prices and disrupt supplies, as authorities continue large-scale culling to contain the virus infection.

“It will be dramatic for us,” said Robert Schmauk, head of the Bavarian poultry industry association, on public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk.

“An increase of up to 50 percent in egg prices is not out of the question.” He added that while empty supermarket shelves were unlikely, certain poultry products might become harder to find due to strong demand and tighter supply.

The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), Germany’s federal animal health agency, reported on Sunday that about 400,000 poultry, including chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys, have been culled nationwide.

More than 30 commercial farms have been affected. “It is impossible to predict how the situation will develop, but the FLI is expecting a further increase in outbreaks and cases,” institute head Christa Kuehn said.

The worst-hit regions are the eastern states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg. In two locations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania alone, nearly 150,000 laying hens have been culled.

On Sunday, local authorities in eastern Brandenburg announced that an additional 130,000 animals would be slaughtered to contain the outbreak.

The FLI has raised the risk level for poultry farms from “low” to “high,” citing a surge in infections during the autumn bird migration season.

The current wave of infections began earlier than usual. With the peak of migration still ahead, authorities warn that the risk of avian influenza spreading to poultry flocks remains high.

Among wild birds, cranes have been particularly affected, with the FLI reporting what it described as “an unprecedented level of infections in Germany.”

In the Linumer Teichland wetlands in northwestern Brandenburg, volunteers had collected about 1,500 dead cranes by Saturday.

Some media outlets have referred to cranes as “super spreaders.” However, Kuehn explained that while cranes are highly susceptible and shed large amounts of the virus, they are not the sole transmitters.

“Outdoor-raised poultry such as ducks and geese are particularly at risk, as wild birds can easily enter their enclosures,” she said.

Contaminated footwear, vehicles, or equipment can also spread the virus. Germany’s public health authority, the Robert Koch Institute, said bird flu rarely infects humans, and only in isolated cases involving close contact with infected birds, such as farm workers.

Officials advised the public to avoid direct contact with sick or dead wild birds. German media recalled that the 2020-2021 winter season saw the country’s most severe bird flu outbreak on record, when more than two million animals were culled. (Xinhua)

Namibia records 12 pct rise in road fatalities

WINDHOEK, Oct. 27 — Namibia’s road accidents have seen a rise in fatalities this year, with the number of lives lost per 100,000 people jumping to 13.8, a 12 percent rise from 2024.

Motor Vehicle Fund (MVA) Chief Executive Rosalia Martins-Hausiku released the figure at the two-day 10th Annual Road Safety Conference, which commenced on Monday in Swakopmund.

“We have recorded 145.2 injuries per 100,000, a slight decline from 147.4 last year, but in 2023 it was lower at 133.7. The Erongo region remains second to the Khomas region,” she said.

According to Martins-Hausiku, the MVA Fund pays an average of 250 million Namibian dollars (about 14.4 million U.S. dollars) per year, of which 200 million Namibian dollars are for medical expenses.

“Some of this money can go toward equipping public hospitals with necessary equipment,” she added. Martins-Hausiku said the leading causes of these preventable tragedies include speeding, drunk driving, fatigue, and pedestrian negligence.

“We are working hand in hand with the Ministry of Works and Transport, the National Road Safety Council, the Roads Authority, the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, and traffic law enforcement agencies to strengthen prevention through data-driven enforcement and awareness,” she said.
