UPINGTON, SOUTH AFRICA, June 26, In a significant bust, law enforcement officials at the departures area of Upington International Airport intercepted a truck bound for Namibia and uncovered suspected boxes containing illicit substances. The subsequent investigation led to the seizure of seven boxes, containing a staggering total of 141 parcels believed to be drugs, specifically dagga. The confiscated contraband weighed a total of 144.34 kilograms, with an estimated street value of R 3,608,500-00.
The truck, a Volvo operated by Namlog, was subjected to a routine search by diligent police officials in the early hours of yesterday, uncovering the suspicious cargo. The swift action by the authorities potentially prevented a large number of drugs from reaching their destination.
Upon further examination, it was discovered that the seized parcels contained dagga, a commonly used term for cannabis in South Africa. The drugs were meticulously packaged in 141 parcels, with an average weight of approximately 1.02 kilograms per parcel. The total estimated street value of the dagga was calculated to be R 3,608,500-00.
However, the Border Police reported a different valuation, estimating the worth of the seized drugs to be R 649,530-00. Discrepancies in valuation can be attributed to differences in pricing models used by law enforcement agencies. It is expected that the exact valuation will be determined during the legal proceedings.
