KAMPALA, Nov. 10 — Weather authorities on Monday issued an alert of possible floods and mudslides in Uganda, as heavy rains continue to ravage parts of the East African country.
In a rainfall outlook for November, the Department of Meteorological Services under the Ministry of Water and Environment said the rains are going to continue as earlier predicted in the current rainy season.
According to the agency’s forecasts, the northern and eastern parts of the country, currently experiencing peak rainfall, will continue to receive significant rainfall until mid-November, followed by a gradual decline towards the end of the month.
Meanwhile, central and western regions are expected to experience continued rainfall throughout November. Enhanced rainfall is particularly expected around Lake Victoria, the Elgon highlands, the Ruwenzori ranges, and Southwestern Uganda.
“The current rainfall pattern is projected to have both positive and negative impacts on communities, livelihoods, infrastructure, and the environment,” the agency said in the document.
The agency urged communities in landslide-and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant for warning signs such as ground cracks and promptly report them to the authorities.
In October, nine people were reportedly killed and several others were missing, after heavy rainfall triggered mudslides in the eastern region.(Xinhua)
