OKAHANDJA, 17 JUN – Preparations for the annual 122nd Ovambanderu commemorations of the late Chief Hijakungairi Nguvauva were well underway on Saturday, ahead of the main event scheduled for Sunday at Commando in Okahandja.
The event, to which hundreds of the Ovambanderu people flocked, kicked off on Friday with the arrival of different delegates and commencement of traditional rituals and dances.
In an interview with Nampa, Public Relations Officer of the Ovambanderu Traditional Authority Uazenga Tjiposa highlighted late Nguvauva’s bravery as one of the main reasons of this commemoration.
“He played a pivotal role towards the history of the liberation of this country,” Tjiposa added.
Founding President Sam Nujoma and Ovambanderu Chief Kilus Nguvauva are amongst the speakers expected to address the gathering.
Head of the Ovambanderu in the Botibeng District in Botswana Nguvauva Nguvauva will also attend the gathering and is expected to deliver the vote of thanks.
The event will further involve the gatherers paying tribute to the late chief and his two sons where they are buried.
