KEETMANSHOOP, 19 APR – A new fire station was inaugurated in Keetmanshoop on Thursday.
The facility was constructed with the assistance of the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development at a cost of N.dollars 4 million.
The fire station is located between the Krönlein and Tseiblaagte residential areas for easy access to areas that are prone to fires due to the high prevalence of informal housing.
Westdene and Noordhoek are also easily accessible from this location.
During the inauguration, Keetmanshoop Mayor Gaudentia Krohne urged the community of Keetmanshoop, particularly those residing in informal settlements, to refrain from building their houses or structures in close proximity of each other as this makes it difficult for emergency vehicles to access the areas when needed.
She also said people should contact the emergency services such as the fire brigade or the police if there is a fire instead of trying to extinguish the fire themselves.
“I do not know whether it is due to shock or ignorance, but residents tend to try and take care of emergency situations like fire themselves before they contact emergency services. Please contact the fire brigade or Namibian Police immediately in case of fire,” Krohne said.
She further asked the community to be the eyes and ears of the municipality and guard the fire station against vandalism.
