OSHAKATI, 23 SEP – The LG Bar and Restaurant at Oshakati on Saturday hosted a well-attended Eembezi (beard) Festival which offered N.dollars 15 000 to be won by the champions.
Fifteen bearded men participated in the festival and Petrus Shimweefeleni from Ondobe in the Ohangwena Region and two local young men, George Shivute and Jona Daniel, were declared the winners at the end of the competition.
Shimweefeleni, 63, was a participant with the longest beard, Shivute had the thickest beard and Daniel won the stylish beard token.
Owner of LG, Kristof Amukushu crowned the winners by handing over N.dollars 5 000 to each of the three men.
Shimweefeleni told journalists at the end of the festivities that he uses traditional oil (omaadi eenhanga) to treat his beard and it took him some five years to grow it to the present length.
Several bearded men, although they have not contested, attended the event.
Spokesperson of the organising committee of the festival, Remind Ekandjo told a media briefing held earlier this month that the event was hosted as an “amusement moment” as well as to promote proper beard care and/or treatment for men in Namibia.
Namibian Breweries, Distill, Remind Trading, LLJ Trading, Oshakati Cold Storage, Meatco, Oshikuku Pit Stop, Shetweni Trading, Onyofi Trading, Metro and Oshipuku Trading were the local firms sponsoring the event jointly.
Participants registered for N.dollars 500.
