WINDHOEK, 20 JUL – The Council for Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) has directed its members that all women teams participating in their tournaments should be headed by women.
According to a letter sent to all member associations and seen by Nampa, the executive committee decided at a recent meeting to include in its Women’s Football Regulations, a provision that female coaches should head the national women’s teams.
It also added that a minimum of three women should be in the technical panels of the national women’s teams that will be part of Cosafa Women’s Football competitions.
The statement added that the decision was made to encourage more women to take up coaching jobs in women’s football and that member associations should ensure that female coaches are included in different coaching courses taking place in their countries.
Namibia Football Association Secretary General, Barry Rukoro said his office had received the directive and will comply.
“I met with the NFA Women’s Desk and we resolved to engage Cosafa on the issue to seek more clarity. Based on our engagement with them, we will weigh how to deal with it if it is obligatory,” he added.
He however said he was in support of the idea as it will help create interest for more women to join the coaching departments of the clubs and national teams.
Meanwhile, Rukoro confirmed that the Brave Gladiators will participate in the 2018 Women’s Cosafa Championships scheduled for Port Elizabeth, South Africa in September.
He added that preparations were at a lower scale for now and that they will draw up an advanced training programme with the women’s desk.
