KATIMA MULILO, 02 APR – Kavango East were crowned the inaugural The Namibian Newspaper Cup netball champions after beating Erongo 39-33 in a nail-biting final match at the Katima Mulilo Sports Complex on Monday.
In the first quarter of the match, Erongo took the lead, but Kavango recovered quickly to make it 13-7.
As the game progressed, Erongo recovered to close the gap of the first quarter, ending this quarter at 19-15.
In the third quarter of the match, Erongo started to take control of proceedings with impressive connecting passes.
However, Kavango kept increasing their lead in the final quarter, ending the game with a six-goal margin.
Kavango East’s centre, Mwengere Diyeve, was crowned player of the match.
The coach of the winning team, Melanie Mbuuru, told Nampa after the match she is happy the team have been crowned the first netball champions of the Newspaper Cup.
“We have made history at Katima Mulilo by becoming the first netball champions. Now, we want to take it from here and concentrate on the youth games which will be played in May,” said Mbuuru.
Erongo’s coach Kanku Bobsey Musambani said his players underestimated Kavango East and they paid the price, but it is a learning curve for them.
“Now we will go back and go do our homework to prepare for the youth games in May,” he said.
The Namibia National Youth Games will take place in Windhoek in May and will see 1 800 athletes competing in 10 sport codes.
