MANILA, Oct. 2 — A town mayor in the northern Philippines La Union Province was shot dead on Monday night by unidentified gunmen.
Police said on Tuesday that Alexander Buquing and his wife, also the town’s vice mayor, were on their way home from a wake when armed men peppered their car with bullets. Buquing, his driver and a bodyguard died on the site while his wife Wendy Joy Buquing was injured.
Police said 39 bullet shells were found in the bullet-riddled car.
Police are investigating the motive of the attack.
Buquing, the 50-year-old mayor of Sudipen town, was the 12th mayor killed since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office in June 2016. At least six vice mayors were also killed during this administration.
Police said the killings could be related to the upcoming local elections in May next year.
