Nujoma gives N.dollars 5 000 to children of the liberation struggle

WINDHOEK, 06 APR – Founding Father Sam Nujoma donated N.dollars 5 000 to a group of Children of the Liberation Struggle (CLS) in support of their planned visit to Kwanza-Sul, Angola.
The group received the donation when they paid a courtesy call on Nujoma here on Thursday.

They plan to travel to that country in August this year “to reconnect with the past for the purpose of finding peace and be able to conquer the feeling of hopelessness to face the future with healed hearts”.

Briefing Nujoma on behalf of the group, Namasiku Lizazi said negative perception prevails about CLS, also known as “struggle kids”, noting that people do not look at the underlying factors of their social behaviour.

She explained that most of them were born in Kwanza-Sul, where they lost their parents at an early stage because of war and this is affecting them till now, as they still experience nightmares of the past.

Kwanza-Sul was Swapo’s biggest refugee camp in Angola, housing approximately 10 000 people at a time. It was provided by the Angolan government as assistance to Swapo for educational purposes during Namibia’s liberation struggle for independence from South Africa.

“The environment we grew up in was tough; there was no proper parental guidance and regular displacement frequently occurred due to news of possible attacks on the camps we lived in, which might be some of the underlying psycho-social factors,” Lizazi said.

She said there are some CLS facing challenges of unemployment just like other Namibians in the country, but are patient and hope to find employment or opportunities to venture into business one day to put their creative ideas to good use.

On his part, Nujoma reminded the group that Government made education free for everyone from pre-primary to secondary level, unlike in exile.
“However, we still have one enemy, which is poverty,” he said.
Nujoma explained that if every Namibian can contribute to children whose parents are unable to pay for tertiary education, then progress will be made in poverty eradication.
