NEW DELHI, Sept. 4 — An Indian court on Tuesday convicted two men for the 2007 twin bomb blasts in India’s southern city of Hyderabad that claimed 44 lives and left 68 others injured.
The quantum of sentence for them is slated for Monday.
Though police had arrested and charged five men, along with two others on the run, for murders and other crimes in connection with the blasts, the court acquitted three others.
“Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge T. Srinivas Rao convicted only Mohammed Akbar Ismail Chowdhari and Aneeq Shafique Sayeed for the blasts. Others have been let off,” a lawyer said.
Interestingly, the trial against the five accused in the case was carried out in a court hall located on the premises of Cherlapalli Central Prison, where the accused have been lodged.
The back-to-back twin blasts took place at a popular eatery claiming 32 lives and at an open air theater at Lumbini Park, a few meters away from the state secretariat, killing 12 others.
A day later, the local police discovered as many as 19 unexploded bombs. Investigators claimed the hands of homegrown terror outfit Indian Mujahideen behind the blasts. – XINHUA
