Windhoek, Oct. 27 – Deputy Minister of Information and communication technology Emma Theofelus hosted an event in Windhoek where she shared with Namibians the United Nations Population Individual Laureate award she won this year.
The event, held at XS Lounge, was attended by first lady Monica Geingos who gave a keynote address. She congratulated Theofelus for winning the 2022 United Nations Population Award Individual Laureate and being the youngest ever person to do so.
Geingos also commended Teofelus’ decision to share her prize with the Namibian nation.
“We are tired of repeating the same words and statistics. Now is the time to do it!” Geingos said, noting how the calibre of individuals and organisations present was highly driven by a spirit of volunteerism.
She was grateful that they came together to give the little they had to make a difference.
She also stressed the need to enable young people to #BeFree from anything that is holding back their potential.
As part of her prize, Theofelus organized a competition for organisations involved in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) and Social Enterprise Awards. The event recognised the young people and Youth Social Enterprises advancing SRHR in Namibia.
Theofelus said she wanted to exercise her role to voice the issues that the youth have or are going through. This is in line with the vision of President Hage Geingob to bring the youth to decision-making tables.
She also stressed the need to enable young people to #BeFree from anything that is holding back their potential.
The first lady congratulated the winners for committing to putting in the work to make a change in their communities at large and pledged to match the prize money given out.
