DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 30 -- Tanzanian authorities on Saturday warned non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in the east African nation against involvement in politics. Richard Sambaiga, Chairman of the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Coordination Board, said the NGOs should conduct their activities in the country according to their constitutions which mainly focused on serving communities. Sambaiga made the warning after he had inspected activities being conducted by NGOs in Mwanza region, northwest of the country. He said during electoral campaigns some of the NGOs abandoned their core responsibilities and helped political parties to campaign ahead of elections. "If one wants to join politics one should quit from involvement in NGOs and get into politics personally, and not by using the NGOs," said Sambaiga. In July 2018, the government issued a stern warning against NGOs that violated the country's laws and regulations. The warning was issued by the Deputy Registrar of NGOs, Baraka Leonard, during the winding up of a two-day meeting that was aimed at reviewing the NGO policy that has been in use since 2001.
