Northern Stars throw title race wide open after win against Spurs

REHOBOTH, 14 JUN  – Northern Stars Football Club from Walvis Bay blew the title race of the Southern Stream First Division (SSFD) Coastal Stream open with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Western Spurs on Wednesday evening.
Rookies Northern Stars came from a goal down to defeat neighbours Western Spurs in the Walvis Bay derby at the Kuisebmund Stadium.
Western Spurs took the lead in the first half through the boot of Akio van Wyk and maintained the lead till the end of the first half.
At 1-0 in favour of Western Spurs, immediately after the restart, Northern Stars equalised through Wandjiva Onesmos and soon took the lead with Kleophas Anannias scoring their second goal of the night.
Western Spurs pressed for an equaliser, but the rear guard of Northern Stars stood firm.
Another goal came against the rub of play in the second half with Onesmos again putting his name on the scoresheet to stretch the lead to 3-1.
Not to be outdone, Western Spurs reduced the deficit through the boot of Tyron Mouton, before Northern Stars scored with Anannias getting his brace and fourth goal of his team to make it 4-2.
Deep into the second half, Brandon Cohen made it 4-3 for a nervy end to the game.
Coach of Western Spurs, Nico Freygang told Nampa on Thursday the team had injuries to key players and this disrupted the rhythm of the team.
“Losing key players at this stage of the competition is always hard, but we hope to be back to winning ways and avoid relegation in our next two games against PC Blue Boys and Flamingoes,” Freygang said.
Meanwhile, coach of Northern Stars, Werner Kupembona after the game said the aim is to stay in the league but did not rule out the possibility of doing the unthinkable; winning the league.
“We were in a dangerous position (last on the log) and fortunately picked up three valuable points. If possible, we want to win the league and so far, I am happy with the performance of my players,” Kupembona said.
The win lifted Northern Stars to fourth from sixth on the table with 10 points and two games remaining.
Log leaders Spoilers have 11 points with three games remaining, followed by Flamingoes on 10 points with four games remaining along with sixth-placed PC Blue Boys on 8 points.
Khomas Namibian Police are third on 10 points, having three more games to play, with Western Spurs in fifth place with 9 points and two games remaining.
