Ongwediva, Oshana Region, July 7 – The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Honorable Erastus Uutoni, emphasized the significance of community engagement during the official inauguration of the sewer reticulation projects in Extension 15 and Sky Phase 1 locations at Ongwediva. In his address, Minister Uutoni stated, “Your community is your investors, so we must listen to them.”
The Ongwediva Town Council successfully constructed these sewer systems at a combined cost of N$15.2 million, providing sewer services to 620 erven. This initiative aims to address the previous challenges faced by these areas due to the continuous emptying of septic tanks. The implementation of the sewerage system will not only improve the living standards of residents but also facilitate further development in the region.
Considering various social and economic factors, the Council resolved to grant residents relief by providing free sewer connections until December 2023. This decision demonstrates the Council’s commitment to the community, as it will forego an amount of N$1,345,201.60 during this period. Minister Uutoni commended this commendable action, particularly in the current economic difficulties faced by many residents.

During his speech, Minister Uutoni welcomed and encouraged similar initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges faced by communities, particularly those residing in underdeveloped and informal areas. He emphasized the importance of access to proper sanitation as a crucial step in combating exposure to harmful bacteria and diseases.
Minister Uutoni urged all stakeholders to work together to improve sanitation across towns and settlements, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to treat wastewater, offer adequate sanitation, and recover valuable resources. He called for unity and support in ensuring the successful completion of such projects for the benefit of the entire community.
As a line Ministry, Minister Uutoni pledged to continue advocating for increased funds for Local Authorities, recognizing their proximity to the electorate and their understanding of their needs and aspirations. He emphasized the importance of remaining focused and working as a team to bring about the necessary development in communities.
In conclusion, Minister Uutoni urged the community to take advantage of the Council’s offer for free connections and emphasized the importance of protecting the facilities against vandalism. He appealed to the residents of Ongwediva to fulfil their municipal services obligations on time, as it contributes to the infrastructural development of the town.
The inauguration of these sewer reticulation projects marks a significant step toward improving sanitation and fostering community development.
