Kavango East youth encouraged to learn different skills

RUNDU, 22 AUG – Councillor of the Rundu Urban Constituency, Vicky Kauma has urged the youth to learn different skills that will enable them to be self-employed.
Kauma said this when she received a donation of 10 African djembe drums from the Hit the Beat Academy on behalf of the Home of the Arts (HOTA) in a ceremony here on Monday.
The councillor said the youth should grab opportunities that can teach them skills in different fields, especially in performing arts and be able to make a living out of it.
“Learning different skills where one can make a living can help government to look into ways of how to assist them and will reduce the pressure on government,” she said.
Kauma also encouraged young people, especially in Kavango East, to desist from waiting for government handouts and be in unity to fight unemployment.
“Young people, you cannot continue to sit and wait for the government. Stand up and do something for yourself. Where there is a wish, there is a way,” the councillor said.
Kauma further applauded the founders of HOTA, saying they should continue to equip young people with skills that they can use to do something good for their communities.
HOTA is a non-governmental organisation established to train the youth in the Kavango East Region in visual and performing arts.
The organisation has been receiving support from the National Arts Council of Namibia and since the beginning of the year, has managed to offer workshops in different crafts such as photography, graphic design and music.
HOTA’s founder and managing director, Nanyemba Katamba applauded Hit the Beat for the donation, saying that the drums will further HOTA’s goals in encouraging young people to master the art of performing live music.
Hit the Beat is an organisation which has been in existence for about 20 years and aims to unify people through music, dance, art and culture.
Founder and Director of Hit the Beat, Simone de Picciotto said they decided to donate the drums to HOTA because drums can bring people together through rhythm.
