RUNDU, 24 JUN – The Kavango East Regional Council (KERC) will follow Swapo Party Secretary General, Sophia Shaningwa’s directive to uphold the status quo in council management committees dominated by the ruling party.
This was said by KERC Chief Regional Officer, Ludwig Thikusho in an interview with Nampa on Thursday, after the swearing-in ceremony of the council was postponed for the second time.
Thikusho said the councillors have resolved to keep the current management committee members in their positions in their last consultative meeting before the supposed swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday.
The swearing-in has now been postponed to next week, 28 June 2018.
The councillors were in a heated meeting as it has been alleged that some councillors wanted to change the leadership structure.
It is being said that some councillors wanted council and management committee chairperson, John Thighuru, Councillor of Mukwe Constituency replaced by someone else.
The other two management committee members are Mavara Filipus of Mashare and Petrus Kavhura of Ndonga-Linena.
The remaining regional councillors are Eugen Likuwa for Ndiyona, Michael Sikongo for Rundu Rural and Victoria Kauma for Rundu Urban.
The CRO explained that since all the regional councillors are from the same party and there is no one from the opposition, they have decided to respect each other and follow the directive as set by the party SG.
The KERC management committee members’ term expired on 04 June 2018 and a new committee was supposed to be sworn in last week, which was later shifted to Wednesday, 20 June 2018.
“The councillors have so far resolved the misunderstanding they had among themselves and have decided to have the swearing-in according to the directive,” said Thikusho.
