WINDHOEK, 26 JUNE – President Hage Geingob has condemned the bomb blast at a rally addressed by Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Bulawayo on Saturday.
The explosion happened as Mnangagwa descended from the podium after addressing members of the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) at the White City Stadium.
He managed to escape unharmed, but police said more than 40 people were injured in the blast.
Geingob, who is also Deputy Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), in a media statement on Monday called for calm and said political violence would not be tolerated in the SADC region.
“The only legitimate path towards forming a government in the African Union is by winning peaceful, free and fair elections and such a process should be respected in Zimbabwe, where elections are due on 30 July this year,” he said.
The president also condemned the deadly attack during which two people died at a public rally addressed by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on the same day in Addis Ababa, reiterating that the rule of law should prevail.
