OTJIWARONGO, 16 JUL – A 34-year-old woman appeared in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court Monday on a charge of murder in connection with the death of a man at Kalkfeld over the weekend.
Phidelia Philander appeared before Otjiwarongo Magistrate Eduard Kesslau, who remanded her in custody until 24 September 2018 to allow for further police investigations.
She was represented by her private lawyer, Mariaane Dreyer.
Public prosecutor Anna Amukugo, who represented the State, strongly objected to the granting of bail, saying police investigations in the matter had just began.
Philander stands accused of stabbing the 42-year-old Ernst Mewis to death.
It is alleged that they had been socialising with friends at her house in Kalkfeld.
In the early hours of Saturday, Philander and Mewis were allegedly alone after their friends were seen leaving the house.
Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha on Monday told Nampa Philander reportedly asked Mewis to leave as well as she wanted to go to bed, but he did not want to.
“She then started pushing him out of the house and a bottle of beer which was in his hands allegedly fell to the ground and broke and Philander was injured,” Mbeha said.
She then allegedly used a knife to stab Mewis once in the chest and he died on the spot.
His relatives have been informed of his death.
