WINDHOEK, 01 OCT – Windhoek Gymnasium Private School dominated the second edition of the Khomas School Sport Region (KSSR) awards held in the capital recently.
The KSSR awards, initiated in 2017, rewards all the best achievers in the different sport codes in their league.
The Eros Primary School hall played host to the awards on Thursday which saw Windhoek Gymnasium athletes collect most of the medals and certificates awarded to over 160 athletes in athletics, basketball, football, netball, rugby and tennis.
Besides individual awards, Gymnasium walked away with six of the 12 team awards handed out on the night.
Gymnasium won the netball awards for the Under-10, U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17, and U-19 categories.
Other trophies went to Moses van der Byl Primary School who won the U-13 football trophy; St George’s High School (U-15 football); Ella du Plesis (U-17 football); Centaurus (U-19 football); Windhoek High School (U-15 netball) and Windhoek Afrikaans Privaatskool (U-12 netball).
Isack Hamata, a managing member of Namibia Premier League outfit Tura Magic, during the event spoke to the young athletes about the importance of sports.
“We need to avoid an unhealthy lifestyle… It is important to take sport seriously before the age of 30 years so that when you are old your body is used to exercising and you would have avoided the unnecessary diseases that are now common, because of the unhealthy lifestyles people are living,” he said.
Hamata also called on the athletes to put as much effort into their studies as they do into sports, to ensure that they have a future after sports.
“It is important that you give the same attention to your books as you give to sports as being a sportsman or woman is a short career, that is why it’s important to study and have something to fall back on when you no longer practice sports,” he said.
