KIEV, Sept. 21 — Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday pledged to do his utmost to ensure the smooth run of the upcoming presidential, parliamentary and local elections.
“As the president, I guarantee free, fair and democratic elections of the head of the state, the new parliament, and the local governing bodies,” Poroshenko said in his annual address to the parliament.
He urged lawmakers to refrain from taking populist decisions ahead of the elections, stressing the importance of translating the promises given to the public into action.
Poroshenko also welcomed the parliament’s recent decision to increase the number of members of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), saying it will contribute to a transparent electoral process.
Earlier this week, the parliament adopted a law increasing the number of seats in Ukraine’s CEC from 15 to 17, meaning that each parliamentary political force would have its representative in the commission during the elections.
The presidential election in Ukraine is scheduled for March 31, 2019, while parliamentary elections have been set for Oct. 27, 2019. – XINHUA
