SWAKOPMUND, 17 SEP – Two tourists narrowly escaped a robbery while driving to Sossusvlei on Sunday.
The police in the Erongo Region have now cautioned travellers using the same road to not stop under any circumstances.
According to a police report issued by Chief Inspector Daniel Gurirab of the Namibian Police Force in the Erongo Region on Monday, the German couple was driving to Sossusvlei from Walvis Bay in their rental car when a black sedan overtook them and blocked their vehicle.
“One man emerged from the vehicle pretending to be in need of petrol. Two others then jumped out carrying an axe and a baseball bat which they used to smash the car window and slash the rear tyre,” Gurirab said.
The couple managed to speed off despite the deflated tyre. They warned another oncoming group of tourists and later reported the matter to the Swakopmund Police Station.
Meanwhile, last week, two female tourists were robbed while driving from Uis to Spitzkoppe.
The police report said the Polish nationals were chased down by a silver sedan and robbed of over N$7 000 in cash, clothes and gadgets.
The women were not harmed but their vehicle was damaged.
A case was opened at the Usakos Police Station.
No arrests have been made so far in either of the cases. – NAMPA
