Swakopmund, Aug. 4 -– Month-long festivities and activities including special exhibitions, creative and artistic plays, sports, youth talent shows and markets officially kicked off today (04 August 2022) to mark the 130th anniversary of Swakopmund.
The birthday celebrations of Swakopmund are open to all residents and visitors from all around Namibia and are in recognition of the founding of Swakopmund as the country’s main harbour 130 years ago.
“During the colonial period, the coastal waters were far too shallow, a sheltered lagoon was missing and the surf was too strong. As the disembarkation of settlers and troops on surf boats was a life-threatening undertaking, an artificial harbour was built at very high costs,” remarked the governor of Erongo Region, Neville Andre.
“Initially, a 325-metre-long, wooden jetty was built in 1902, which was replaced by an iron one in 1912. The complete supply of the German colony was handled via Swakopmund. The remains of this Jetty can still be seen today and in 2010 an oyster bar opened on the jetty,” he said.

Today, Swakopmund has developed into a modern city, that many call home as it caters for Namibians from all walks of life.
The governor highlighted that today’s celebrations are testimony that “we are all Namibians and that we celebrate our heritage together as a nation”.
During the official launch of the celebrations, governor Andre called for unity, to be able to further develop the town so that Namibian children growing up in such European influence such as Swakopmund due to its history … should proudly know that they are Namibians.
He added that “now that the Covid restrictions have been lifted, let us welcome our tourists back with the hospitality we are renowned for. Let us not rob or attack them, but be tourism ambassadors for Swakopmund.”
“May the festivities be peaceful and enjoyable for both residents and visitors,” concluded the governor.
Happy 130 Anniversary Swakopmund!!!
