WINDHOEK, 12 APR. – People using the Orange River in the //Kharas Region have been advised to apply stringent water saving measures.
The Department of Hydrological Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry made this appeal in the flood bulletin report released on Wednesday.
It said users of the Orange River should apply these measures because of fluctuating critical water flows observed in the lower part of the river.
According to the bulletin, the Blouputs site along the river recorded 0.53 metres (m) of rain, while Sendelingsdrift recorded 0.24 m.
People living in flood prone areas in the Zambezi Region and along the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin were also cautioned to take precautionary measures.
The Zambezi River level at Katima Mulilo continues to rise and it is currently at 6.48 m, whereas the Okavango River water levels also continue to rise, currently 6.22 m at Rundu while the Nkurenkuru site measured 3.98 m.
Although good rains were observed over the north-western, central and eastern parts of Namibia, the inflow of water into dams serving the central part of the country is lower than the previous season, according to figures provided by NamWater.
As of Monday, the Von Bach Dam’s capacity was recorded at 52,8 per cent compared to last season where it had an inflow of 58,6 per cent over the same period.
Swakoppoort recorded an inflow of 36,5 per cent compared to 38,6 per cent last season, while Omatako is at 9,4 per cent in contrast to 93,7 per cent previously.
Hardap Dam was recorded at 47,1 per cent compared to 69,9 per cent last year. Naute was at 71,7 per cent from 97,7 per cent last year, while Oanob Dam was at 66,5 per cent in contrast to 91,2 per cent intake during the last rainy season.
