ONGWEDIVA, Sept. 26 – Chaos erupted during a public meeting held at Elyambala by Ongwediva Town Council last Sunday, as community members were opposed to certain land allocations.
On-lookers said the chaos was a result of the actions by Mayor of Ongwediva Angelina Angula, who allegedly allocated a piece of land to prominent businessman Benz Zaaruka, without informing Uusiku Wendelinus the owner of land.
According to Wendelinus, council allocated a piece of land to prominent businessman Benz Zaaruka to begin work on the second phase of the Oshana Mall complex, without the concern of the land owners.
Residents of Elyambala also expressed dissatisfaction over the demands from Town Council instructing them to enter agreement of selling their plots in order to pave way for development.
Few residents claim that representatives of Ongwediva Town Council that they meet are lying to people and omitting important details such as the relocation process and compensation.
Warren Untag, a resident of Elyambala also complained of the lack of interest shown by town council and the Mayor of Ongwediva, and accused them of trying to impose on residents without coming to an agreement on whether to sell their plot or not.
“We requested for answers as to what will happen to people and where will they be relocated, but town council did not get back to us,” said Untag.
It was reported that Zaaruka had planned to construct the second phase of Oshana Mall in the town of Ongwediva during the first quarter of 2016, however it had not materialized at the time as council failed to negotiate with land owners.
