KEETMANSHOOP, 22 JUN – The Roads Authority (RA) plans to rehabilitate the road from Mariental to Grünau next year, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Conrad Lutombi announced on Friday.
Briefing //Kharas Governor, Lucia Basson and councillors on RA’s five-year strategic plan in a meeting here, Lutombi said his company has prioritised the road from Mariental passing through Tses and Keetmanshoop all the way to Grünau.
He said the rehabilitation will also include the road’s expansion as it plays an important role in leading to South Africa.
The procurement process for the road, he noted, is in progress and it might take time as it has to go through the government procedures.
“The money is available for this road, if all goes well, the ground-breaking ceremony will take place at the end of this year or early next year and the rehabilitation will start immediately,” Lutombi assured.
Other plans for the //Kharas Region include the upgrading of the Namibia Traffic Information System (NaTIS) facilities in Keetmanshoop and Oranjemund and the construction of a weighbridge at the region’s capital.
In her response, Basson, who expressed satisfaction with previous road projects in her region, urged RA to use the money for the intended purposes.
“I am very much aware of the economic crisis of this country; let us use the limited resources we have to deliver on what we intend to deliver. If we say this and this we will do, let us do it,” she stressed.
The governor also encouraged the company to work hand in hand with her office and the regional council in order to consult on what projects are to be done and what projects could wait.
