WINDHOEK, 15 AUG – The Ovambanderu community will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the reburial of the remains of Hijatuvao Nguvauva on Saturday at Okeseta in the Omaheke Region.
He is the son of the late Kahimemua Nguvauva.
The Ovambanderu community decided to conduct their commemorations at these sacred graves ever since 1948, during the reburial of the remains of Nguvauva.
Speaking to Nampa this week, Urioukuao Kaaheke, brigadier of Commando 2 said the preparations for the event are in full swing and urged other commandos to play their part.
“We expect the community members to arrive on Friday while Ozondangere will perform the traditional rituals to welcome the people,” he said.
Regarded as a hero of the Ovambanderu community, Nguvauva played a significant role during the battle of Otjunda on 06 May 1896 as he was with his father Kahimemua Nguvauva, who was arrested by the German Schutztruppe at Omukuruvaro (Kalkfontein).
Kaaheke explained that fortunately enough, he concealed himself a few meters away from the Germans and fled to Botswana in 1904.
In 1931, he visited Namibia and showed people where his father was arrested and was the person who introduced the green flag for the Ovambanderu people to differentiate them from Ovaherero people.
On his part, Ovambanderu Traditional Authority senior councillor, Hosea Handura said there will be a drill a competition in which all commandos will participate.
He added that delegations from Okotjize, Pilane, Toromoja and Gamiland in Botswana are expected to be present at this year’s event.
The official programme will start on Saturday with speeches and statements from different leaders while Sunday’s programme will be led by parading to the gravesite to pay homage to the heroes.
Okeseta, also known as Farm Gunichas, is located 10 kilometres south of Gobabis.
