WINDHOEK, 15 AUG – City of Windhoek (CoW) considering to upgrade their development and mass housing strategies to improve land and housing allocation in both urban and rural areas as means of ensuring equal development in Namibia.
These were the remarks of CoW Human Settlement Manager, Faniel Maanda at the University of Namibia (UNAM) panel discussion here on Tuesday.
He pointed out that the urban population stands at 50 per cent, hence, the upgrading of these policies will improve the country’s sustainable development.
“By developing existing infrastructures, looking towards formal land ownership and engaging in projects that can generate income will lead towards transforming rural areas,” Maanda added.
At the same event, Namibia Statistics Agency’s Senior Statistician, Alina Nampala, also specified the increment of migration since 2001 in Namibia.
She detailed that in 2001 migration stood at 33 percent and to date at 47 percent with a future projection of 67 percent in 2041.
“Urbanisation can lead to the industrialisation of a country. At the same time, with the unemployment rate, it leads to the increment of informal settlements,” she stipulated.
UNAM Sociology Lecturer, Ellison Tjirera, agreeing with Nampala, stated that often migrators do not realise that when they move to urban towns, poverty travels with them.
He also said that people often migrate to seek quality education and employment not realising that the competition rate in terms of employment is high.
“Hence formulating rural development strategies and investing in agricultural projects will bring about expansion in rural areas,” he added.
