WINDHOEK, 16 SEP – The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) has cautioned prospective candidates against ‘slate politics’ in the run-up to their elective congress.
PDM’s secretary-general (SG), Manuel Ngaringombe in an interview on Sunday said they based their warning on rival political parties’ experiences.
“In politics you learn. We know what slate politics has brought to the ruling party… Serious divisions, serious camps. We know parties such as Nudo are currently in court and so forth,” Ngaringombe said.
The SG said PDM members should elect individuals based on merit and not on the basis of whom they are affiliated to.
“It’s just lessons learnt in Namibian politics. We can’t fall into the same trap. People must be voted for on their capabilities, on their manifestos, I must not vote for a person because he is in the Ngaringombe faction and I’ll be voting for Ngaringombe even though Ngaringombe is useless,” he said.
The slate refers to a list of candidates to be considered for nomination by a political party for elections, appointments or the like.
The SG further said the party cannot afford to be compromised ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The party’s elective congress will take place later this year, with the central committee still to give notice with regards to a date.
Ngaringombe said they will convene a central committee meeting in October, where a date will be decided on.
In a separate interview earlier this year, the SG all positions will be vacant and up for grabs.
