Namibia’s River People Take Action to Restore Fish and Rivers

Staff Writer

KATIMA MULILO, April 27 — The people of Sikunga and Impalila Conservancies are taking action to restore their rivers, and hope to inspire others to take similar steps. The Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF) has released a short film titled “The River People,” produced in Namibia, which tells the story of how the river people from conservancies in Kavango and Zambezi managed to take action to restore their fish and rivers altogether. This story highlights the hard work and dedication it took for the river people from the first reserves in Sikunga and Impalila to be where they are today, through collaborative work among themselves and with partners such as the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) and the NNF’s project donors.

Since 2001, the NNF has steadily and systematically built up a knowledge base and expertise in managing inland fisheries. The EU-funded Ecofish grant Strengthening Community Fisheries in KAZA project, currently being implemented by the NNF, aims to strengthen sustainable fisheries management through ecosystem-based adaptation, enhancing the socio-ecological resilience of communities. Local communities are increasingly and rightfully being recognized as critical partners in establishing and maintaining fisheries reserves.

This short film confirms that when communities come together and take action to restore fisheries to an extent where they can reasonably expect to go to the river and catch some fish for eating, trading, and enjoyment, others can follow suit.

Germany Funds State-of-the-Art Laboratory to Boost Namibia’s Public Health System

Staff Writer

WINDHOEK, April 26 — The University of Namibia’s School of Medicine officially inaugurated its Bio-Safety Level 3 (BSL3) Laboratory on April 25, 2023. His Excellency Mr. Herbert Beck, German Ambassador to Namibia, presided over the inauguration.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a devastating disease that affects millions of people worldwide, killing 1.6 million each year. Namibia is among the 30 countries with the highest burden of TB, with 12,000 new cases and 1,500 deaths annually. Meanwhile, COVID-19 has claimed about 4,000 lives in the country. Improving healthcare and reducing the burden of infectious diseases requires suitable research and diagnostic capabilities.

To this end, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) provided funding for a joint project aimed at strengthening the Namibian health system. Germany funded the infrastructure for a BSL-3 Laboratory with 6 million NAD through the German Development Bank KfW, while laboratory equipment and materials worth 3.5 million NAD were procured through the Federal States Programme (German: Bund-Länder-Programme; BLP) and implemented by GIZ. Additional funding of 1 million NAD was contributed by UNAM.

The new BSL-3 Laboratory is equipped to conduct research and diagnostic testing for COVID-19, tuberculosis, HIV, rabies, avian influenza, and other infectious pathogens. It could also support One Health surveillance activities and field interventions in Namibia. The facility will work closely with the Ministry of Health and Social Services, the Namibia Institute of Pathology, and other stakeholders to increase responsiveness and capacities in the country’s healthcare sector.

Dr. Emmanuel Nepolo, Head of UNAM Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, said that the new facility is a sign that Namibia is establishing local laboratory infrastructure and capacities to make it less reliant on other countries for pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.

The laboratory was designed in compliance with international standards and manufactured in South Africa. It comprises a containerized structure with medical equipment and a dedicated plant room for filter-controlled airflow. The laboratory incorporates various facilities, including Reagent Preparation, Specimen Receiving, Ante, Culture, and Detection Rooms.

The funding from the German government will allow UNAM to expand its research agenda and training with internationally renowned universities. The project aims to equip the School of Medicine with the necessary equipment to increase research outputs and diagnosis of public health relevance. – Namibia Daily News

Namibia Told to Adopt Vertical Integration to Build Sustainable Extractive Industry

NDN Staffer

WINDHOEK, April 26 — The African Energy Chamber (AEC) held an industry intelligence session at the 2023 Namibia International Energy Conference (NIEC) on Tuesday. The AEC, which represents the African energy sector, shared its insights on local business development and skill-building opportunities within the industry. The session focused on key issues faced by the Namibian and African oil and gas sector, from job creation across the energy value chain to the implementation of effective local content policy.

Led by AEC Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk, the workshop highlighted the lack of employment opportunities and skill-building within Namibia’s extractive industries. Ayuk emphasized the importance of creating jobs and involving young people and businesses in the industry. Grace Orife, CEO of Adelaar Energy Limited, emphasized the need for gender diversity and inclusion within the oil and gas industry. The panellists encouraged collaboration and initiatives such as the African Women Business Energy Network to connect young girls with successful women in the region who have already accomplished a lot in oil and gas. They also encouraged women to enter STEM fields.

Anthony Paul, Principal Consultant at the Association of Caribbean Energy Specialists, stressed the importance of local subcontracting in building a sustainable and inclusive extractive industry. Dr. Riverson Oppong, Commercial Operations Manager at Ghana National Gas Company, echoed the value of establishing a local supply chain for emerging producers like Namibia.

“In the oil and gas industry, you’re building facilities to last for 20-40 years. You want to be able to ensure that the locals in that country are able to manage those assets, as in the long term, it becomes increasingly difficult to hire the necessary ex-pats,” added Seyi Afolabi, CEO of Reservoir & Facilities Solutions Nigeria Limited. “It is in your interest, as an international company, to train the people there. As soon as local governments see huge investment, you need to position your people in order to take over.”

The panellists emphasized the need for a locally managed, vertically integrated business model that ensures greater socioeconomic value and impact. The session concluded with a call to action for the industry to work together to create inclusive employment opportunities, encourage local sub-contracting, and establish effective local content policies.

Namibia’s Insurance Sector: How Seasonal Variations and Drought Affect Spending

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, April 26 — Namibia is renowned for its diverse climate, stunning landscapes, and unique wildlife. However, its weather patterns can be unpredictable, and its short-term insurance sector is particularly vulnerable to seasonal fluctuations.

The country’s two main seasons, the rainy season from November to April and the dry season from May to October, have a significant impact on insurance spending. During the rainy season, floods and water damage to properties are common, leading to an increase in insurance claims. Meanwhile, the dry season is associated with a higher risk of fire damage, which can also result in an uptick in claims.

However, the most pressing concern facing Namibia’s insurance sector is drought. As one of the world’s driest countries, droughts are frequent in Namibia and affect not only the agricultural industry but also the short-term insurance market.

During a drought, many people may view insurance as a luxury rather than a necessity. With limited financial resources, Namibians prioritize spending on basic necessities like food, water, and shelter, leaving little room for insurance premiums. As a result, insurance companies may witness a decline in their customer base, with many customers opting to forego coverage to save money.

However, insurance is a critical necessity, particularly during droughts that can cause significant damage to properties and businesses. Insurance can protect individuals and businesses from financial losses during these unforeseen catastrophes and provide peace of mind during challenging times.

To address the issue of drought and its impact on insurance spending, Namibian insurance companies must take a proactive approach. This may involve offering more affordable insurance options to individuals and businesses experiencing financial hardship due to drought. Insurance companies can also work with the government and other stakeholders to develop policies and programs that encourage people to prioritize insurance coverage, even during times of financial strain.

In conclusion, while seasonal variations in Namibia can affect insurance spending, drought poses the most significant threat. Insurance is a necessity, not a luxury, during these times, and insurance companies must collaborate with stakeholders to design strategies that encourage people to prioritize insurance coverage even in times of financial stress.
