KABUL, May 18 — Afghan security forces have confiscated dozens of weapons, including 22 Kalashnikov rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition in northern Kunduz province over the past year, in a significant crackdown on illegal arms trafficking and potential militant activity, the Ministry of Interior Affairs said in a statement on Monday.
In connection with the seizures, 52 individuals suspected of involvement in the illegal possession and use of these weapons have been arrested.
Following preliminary investigations, they have been handed over to judicial authorities for further prosecution, it said.
The Afghan government has collected thousands of weapons and large stockpiles of ammunition nationwide as part of efforts to enhance security and stability in the war-torn country. (Namibia Daily News/Xinhua)
