Namibia’s Digital Transformation: Embracing Technology to Drive Economic Growth

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, May 15 — Namibia is embracing digital transformation as a critical component of economic growth and development. The country has recognized the importance of digital technologies to enhance competitiveness, spur innovation, and improve the quality of life of its citizens. Namibia is driving its economic growth by implementing legislation and initiatives surrounding information and communication technology (ICT). These policies and initiatives foster a conducive environment for digital innovation and provide the necessary infrastructure and resources for digital transformation.

Key initiatives in Namibia include the establishment of the National ICT Policy, the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN), and the Namibian Broadband Policy. The growth of mobile and internet penetration has been a key driver of digital transformation in Namibia. According to a CRAN Data Study in 2022, 85% of the population is covered by 4G, and internet penetration stands at 51%. This growth has created opportunities for businesses, government, the private sector, and individuals to access and leverage digital technologies for various purposes, including communication, e-commerce, education, and e-government services.

Digital transformation in Namibia is also making its footprint in the e-government sector. Green Enterprise Solutions, a leading ICT solutions provider, has implemented an Online Student Loan Management system for NSFAF that allows students to apply for loans from anywhere and assists NSFAF in keeping records up to date. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also launched an online passport and short-term work visa application platform, improving efficiency and customer service. Additionally, several ministries and state-owned enterprises are investing in digital solutions to improve productivity and serve their clients effectively.

The increasing availability of digital infrastructure is pivotal to developing Namibia’s digital economy. Significant investments have been made in expanding the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, with several companies launching high-speed mobile networks and internet services nationwide. Further development of the digital economy in Namibia depends on the increasing availability of digital infrastructure. This will lead to more significant opportunities for entrepreneurship and innovation and improved access to education and healthcare services. The continued expansion of digital infrastructure in Namibia is critical to ensuring that all citizens can fully participate in and benefit from the digital economy.

Digital transformation is also evident in the financial sector in Namibia. The Bank of Namibia has been actively promoting the adoption of digital financial services, including mobile banking and digital payments. The bank recently published a consultation paper on Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) to enhance financial inclusion, improve access to digital financial services, enhance the efficiency of national payment systems, and encourage the broad digitization of traditionally cash-based segments of the population.

However, there are still challenges to be addressed. The high cost of internet connectivity remains a barrier to internet access for many Namibians. Additionally, there is a vital need to increase the number of skilled professionals in the ICT sector, as this is limiting Namibia’s digital ecosystem growth.

In conclusion, Namibia is committed to driving digital transformation and leveraging technology to improve its economic growth and development. With the government and private sector working together to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the digital space, there is much to be optimistic about. Despite challenges, such as internet connectivity costs and the need for more skilled professionals, Namibia has laid the groundwork for a successful digital transformation. It is time for Namibians to embrace digital transformation and capitalize on the opportunities it presents.

Unlocking Opportunities: Exploring Africa’s Rising Demand for Insurance Products

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, May 15 — The financial services sector plays a vital role in any economy by providing a wide range of products and services to cater to the financial needs of individuals and businesses. In recent decades, Africa’s financial services sector has experienced remarkable growth, driven by increased investments in infrastructure and technology, as well as the expanding middle class and rising incomes. This article examines key trends and challenges in Africa’s financial services sector, with a specific focus on life and funeral insurance.

The Growing Significance of Life and Funeral Insurance in Africa
Life and funeral insurance are gaining increasing prominence within Africa’s financial services sector. This is primarily due to higher mortality rates in Africa compared to many other regions, highlighting the greater necessity for life and funeral insurance products. Furthermore, as incomes rise across several African countries, more individuals seek ways to safeguard their families and themselves from financial uncertainties arising from the loss of a breadwinner. However, a significant challenge faced by the life and funeral insurance industry in Africa is the low insurance penetration.

According to the World Bank, insurance penetration in Africa stands at approximately 3.5%, significantly lower than the global average of 6.3%. This indicates a substantial untapped market for insurance products on the continent, presenting insurers with opportunities to expand their businesses and reach new customers.

Building Trust and Addressing Challenges
A notable hurdle confronting Africa’s life and funeral insurance industry is the lack of trust in insurance companies. Many Africans exhibit scepticism towards insurance products, whether due to prior negative experiences or an inadequate understanding of how insurance functions. Consequently, insurance companies must invest in education and public awareness campaigns to help individuals comprehend the advantages of insurance and how it can safeguard their families and businesses.

Technological Innovations Driving Growth
Technological advancements have played a crucial role in propelling Africa’s financial services sector forward. The proliferation of mobile phones and other digital devices has significantly improved access to financial services for people across the continent. Mobile money services, for instance, have gained popularity as a means of conducting transactions, paying bills, and accessing various financial services.

Furthermore, technological innovations have enabled insurance companies to develop tailored products and services that meet the specific needs of African customers. Some insurers now offer micro-insurance products designed to provide affordable coverage to low-income individuals and families. These products are often distributed through mobile phones, making it more convenient for people to access insurance services.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
While Africa’s financial services sector has experienced substantial growth, several challenges must be addressed to ensure its sustained development. One significant obstacle in many African countries is inadequate infrastructure, which hampers access to financial services, particularly in rural areas with limited availability of banks and other financial institutions.

Another issue confronting Africa’s financial services sector is the lack of robust regulation. Many African countries have inadequate regulatory frameworks, making it challenging for financial institutions to operate effectively and safeguard the interests of their customers. This situation can lead to problems like fraud and corruption, eroding trust in the sector and impeding customers’ confidence in financial institutions.

Despite these challenges, the African financial services sector presents numerous opportunities. As incomes continue to rise and more individuals transition into the middle class, the demand for financial products and services will increase.

Depreciation of South African rand threatens Namibia’s economic growth: expert

WINDHOEK, May 13  — The Namibian economy, which is closely linked to South Africa, with the Namibia dollar pegged one-to-one to the South African rand, is set to feel the ripple effects of geopolitical tensions, a Namibia expert told Xinhua Friday.

Namibian economic analyst and researcher Josef Sheehama highlighted this following the South African rand recently weakening past 19 rands per U.S. dollar for the first time since COVID-19.

“South Africa is Namibia’s major import partner of about 66 percent to 80 percent of total imports. It is early to tell if economic sanctions will be imposed against South Africa, should it be true as alleged by Western countries that South Africa aids material support to countries in conflict, the effects of any sanction will affect Namibia’s economy and local market, even if we don’t have the same problems as South Africa, we are still exposed to all the external factors,” he told Xinhua.

Sheehama said with Namibia’s current narrow industrial and export base, it is going to be difficult to withstand the external shocks.

“Our economy is reliant on a portion of sectors such as fishing, diamonds, and uranium mining. Therefore, should the variables influencing the pair continue at their current state, the rand/Namibia dollar will find it difficult to regain any momentum,” he said.

According to Sheehama, there is a need to understand that a weaker currency could increase the cost of imports, as Namibia uses U.S. dollars to buy oil and other commodities and the negative market sentiments cause capital flight.

Sheehama is of the view that the geopolitical shifts are likely to put incremental pressure on the rand/Namibia dollar over time.

“However, cumulatively, they may start to change investors’ minds on the currency. If they do, the rand/Namibia dollar has a long way to fall given relative depreciation. If momentum builds behind a weakening rand/Namibia dollar, it will have significant repercussions across financial markets,” he concluded.

According to the Bank of Namibia’s economic outlook update report in March, Namibia’s economic growth already is expected to weaken over the next two years as global demand declines and consumer spending power reduces. (Xinhua)

Riaan Cloete: The Midas Touch of Namibian Football

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, May 13 — When it comes to Namibian football players with a golden touch, Riaan Cloete stands out as one of the finest. Hailing from Windhoek, Cloete’s journey in football began at AI Steenkamp Primary School in Katutura, where he displayed his skills and determination. Despite his small stature, Cloete never let that hinder his progress and soon became a dominant force in the centre of the park for his school team at David Bezuidenhout Secondary School in Khomasdal.

Cloete’s talent didn’t go unnoticed, and he was called up to the national under-17 team, representing Namibia at a regional tournament in Malawi. Although they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the African Youth Nations Cup, Cloete’s performance showed his potential. He continued to excel and earned a place in the under-20 and under-23 national teams.

One of Cloete’s fondest memories is defeating Swaziland over two legs with the under-23 team and going head-to-head against the South African Olympic team, which included notable player Daine Klate. With his skills, hard work, and dedication, it wasn’t long before he made his debut for the senior national team, the Brave Warriors, under coach Max “Zoda Five” Johnson. Cloete represented Namibia in various competitions, including the Cosafa Cup in Zambia under coach Ricardo “Bucksy” Mannetti, where he showcased his abilities against formidable opponents such as Bafana Bafana and Swaziland.

However, it was his time with Orlando Pirates that truly solidified Cloete’s reputation. In a twist of fate, he joined the team through an impromptu trial at the Moses van der Byl Primary School sports grounds in Soweto. Despite not intending to participate, Cloete’s exceptional performance caught the attention of Mabos “Vialli” Ortman, a former star player, who recommended his signing to the team management. For eight years, Cloete became the heart of the Pirates’ midfield, contributing goals and orchestrating plays with finesse. His time with the club resulted in victories in the NFA Cup and the Namibian Premier League, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Unfortunately, in 2013, Cloete faced a setback when he suffered a serious knee injury that sidelined him for an entire season. The Pirates’ management decided to release him from his contract, leading him to join Hotspurs in the Khomas First Division. However, fate had other plans when newly appointed African Stars coach Ali Akhan advocated for Cloete’s signing. The Stars’ management initially had reservations due to his injury, but Cloete’s determination and talent convinced them to take a chance. What was supposed to be a six-month contract turned into a fruitful six-year partnership, with Cloete playing a pivotal role in the midfield alongside teammates Rudi Louw and Jamu Ngatjizeko. During his time with African Stars, he won two Bidvest cups, and a Standard Bank Super Cup, and added another league championship trophy to his collection.

Reflecting on his career, Cloete cherishes the memory of his outstanding performance against African Stars, scoring four goals to secure a resounding 6-1 victory for Orlando Pirates. Another standout moment was when he scored a hat-trick against the same Stars team in a league encounter. These matches exemplify his skill and impact on the field.

Today, Cloete finds himself facing the challenges of unemployment while residing on a farm with his parents in the Dordabis district. He acknowledges that life after football can be tough and advises young players to remain disciplined, work hard, and stay away from alcohol and drugs. Cloete emphasizes the importance of finding a balance between on-field success and planning for the future. He regrets not saving more during his playing days and encourages current players to be mindful of their finances and prepare for life after retirement. Despite the hardships he faces, Cloete remains grateful for the opportunities football has given him and hopes to inspire the younger generation to pursue their dreams while also preparing for the inevitable transitions in life. As he continues to navigate the challenges of unemployment, Cloete remains a shining example of resilience and determination, reminding us all that success on the field is just one chapter in the larger book of life.

Namibia raises bulk electricity tariffs by 8.97 pct

WINDHOEK, May 12 — Namibia’s Electricity Control Board (ECB) on Friday announced an average hike of 8.97 percent for bulk electricity purchases for the 2023/2024 financial year.

This will see tariffs increase from the current 1.82 Namibia dollars (about 0.12 U.S. dollars) to 1.98 Namibia dollars per kilowatt hour (kWh).

“The ECB is cognisant that prices of goods and services have been increasing, and this is negatively affecting consumers,” ECB Chief Executive Robert Kahimise told a press briefing in Windhoek, the capital.

He said the approved tariff will apply to NamPower bulk customers that include regional energy distributors, local authorities, regional councils, and mines.

“All distribution licensees will individually apply to the ECB for a review of their distribution tariffs, which when approved will apply to end consumers effective July 1,” Kahimise said.

Meanwhile, the electricity regulator said for the 2023/2024 period, it is forecasted that 59 percent of national demand will be met by regional imports and the rest by local generation.

“The Ruacana Hydro Power Plant is the main source of our local generation. However, it has performed below average over the years, due to the low water flow of Kunene River,” Kahimise said, adding that electricity that was not generated at Ruacana as anticipated during the previous period was replaced by imports at a higher cost, which leads to a higher tariff.

To boost local generation, Kahimise said, NamPower is implementing several projects of which two, the Khan Solar PV (20 MW) and the Anixas II (50 MW), are expected to be commissioned next year. (Xinhua)
